Charlieissocoollike – A Proper Film Maker

What is Charlieissocoollike?

Charlieissocoollike is the title of the YouTube channel run by vlogger Charlie McDonnell. He is one of the most popular, and most established, of the UK YouTube vloggers.  (If you do not know the difference between a gaming vlogger and a non gaming vlogger then this article may help).

Most Established?

In vlogging terms Charlie is an old hand.  In June 2011 Charlie was the first UK vlogger to get over a million subscribers and his style, a good looking young man with especially lovely hair sitting in his bedroom talking about his life, his thoughts – and sometimes nothing in particular,  sort of defined vlogging to the wider world. It even caught Stephen Fry’s attention – he narrates the outro to each film.

Like most vloggers his fan base are teenage girls and it is probably the case that some of Charlie’s original fan girls are now at university. Some may even have graduated.

In vlogging terms he is old school.

So does this mean he is the nation’s number 1 vlogger?

It doesn’t.

When Charlie makes a film it will get into our daily most watched UK vlogger’s chart but long gone are the days when Charlie would top this chart.

Why?

Probably the main reason is because Charlie is trying to move beyond the “sitting on my bed talking about my life” nature of vlogging. He still does that but when he does he tends to make films where he questions ideas and assumptions – for example he has made films where he talks about his fears and in another he talks about the nature of patriotism.

But his real interest is in film making.  Increasingly he is using his channel to showcase his dramatic and comedy short films.

And it could be that this whilst Charlie is not deliberately alienating his core audience with these films – it may be that as he learns more about film making and the importance of scriptwriting he is perhaps moving beyond the teen/tween fangirl fanbase.

And perhaps that is the key thing here – the mad viewing and subscriber numbers for most of these vlogging channels are almost entirely made up of children and teenage girls. The most popular vloggers know that and make daft, carefree, silly content aimed at that core audience but Charlie is trying to move beyond those sort of films to try to do something different with his channel and it may be the case that he is not taking all of his audience of children and younger teenagers with him.

As such we think that whilst he may no longer be the most popular vlogger in the UK we think he may prove to be one of the most interesting.
